What does the future of personal transportation look like? Come find out.
The PEVRA Jump On! Tour: free electric unicycle demos and training in the Eastern Sierra and Southern Nevada, June 11 to 14, 2024
For immediate release · San Francisco, Calif.
What if we told you: your commute could be the happiest part of your day. And you could commute with zero gas and zero sweat, then park under your desk. Or behind your counter.
Well, it's true. The secret to unlocking this future is personal electric vehicles (PEV), including electric unicycles (EUC). Thousands of Americans every year make the EUC their transportation mode of choice for work, play, travel and more.
Led by PEVRA Executive Director Jesse Garnier, a group of riders on EUC are traveling from San Francisco, Calif., to Las Vegas, Nev. They will travel on public roads and will not be accompanied by any support vehicles or staff. The ride is taking place to increase awareness of EUC as a viable form of transportation in urban, suburban and rural settings.
If this seems fun, interesting or important, or sounds like something you want to learn and share with your audience, join us on the PEVRA Jump On! Tour at these stops:
- Tuesday, June 11, 11 a.m. — Camp 4, Yosemite, Calif.
- Wednesday, June 12, 10 a.m. — Gus Hess Community Park, Lee Vining, Calif.
- Thursday, June 13, 5 p.m. — Amargosa Opera House, Death Valley Junction, Calif.
- Friday, June 14, 10 a.m. — Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, Blue Diamond, Nev.
EUC are electric-powered, single-wheel, self-balancing personal electric vehicles helping spark a micromobility revolution. Riders straddle the EUC, standing on foot pedals on either side. After a brief learning curve, riders balance on the wheel and control it with their bodies: leaning forward to accelerate, leaning back to slow down, and shifting their weight to turn.
Modern EUC are serious personal transportation devices, delivering reliable personal travel for distances up to 100 miles at speeds between a walking pace and city traffic. The average American commutes 18 miles each day for work, according to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
At each stop you can, with the help of an expert PEVRA trainer, jump on an electric unicycle for the first time, or come to learn more about micromobility and personal electric vehicles. There is no cost for these events, and EUC training is 100% free.
"At first, riding an electric unicycle looks impossible," said Jesse Garnier, executive director of the Personal Electric Vehicle Riders Association. "But human beings are actually wired for balance, and for most people, riding an EUC quickly 'clicks,' and then it gets easy. It's like having a superpower, being able to glide over the road on a single wheel."
Any rider wishing to train on an electric unicycle must bring and use their own helmet, along with whatever additional safety gear makes you comfortable to begin your riding journey. We recommend gloves or wrist guards; most experienced riders also regularly use elbow and knee pads.
PEVRA was formed in 2018 and is the largest membership-based personal electric vehicle safety advocacy organization in North America. PEVRA exists to define a safe place on our roads, streets and public infrastructure for personal electric vehicles. Our goal is 100% legal status for personal electric vehicles on all infrastructure, in all jurisdictions. We stand far from that goal today.
