Carrying your wheel

Whether an operator lets a wheel on board, and whether it may be charged there, is set by that operator’s own conditions of carriage — a contract document, not a traffic law — and by the dangerous-goods rules that govern lithium batteries in transit. They are a different body of rules from the ones on the rest of this site, and PEVRA holds them to the same standard: a quoted clause, an official link, the source’s own date, an evidence tier and a named verifier, or nothing.

PEVRA has verified 0 of 26 carry answers. That is not a placeholder. No steward has yet opened a single carrier’s conditions of carriage, so every card below says “not yet verified”, and this page will not print a rule until one has.

What a steward has to read first

PEVRA’s launch research named four bodies of rules as the ones that matter most to a rider. None of them has been opened, so none is quoted, linked or paraphrased here — the names are a research queue, not a claim about what they say.

• Air travel. The US hazardous-materials rule for a battery carried by a passenger, in title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations, plus each airline’s own conditions of carriage. Whether an airline’s rule is stricter than the regulation is one of the things a steward has to check.
• Underground and rail in London. Transport for London’s conditions of carriage, which is where a rail operator’s device rules live rather than in any statute.
• Rail and bus in Boston. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s own policy, including whether a device may be charged on board.
• Ferries in the San Francisco Bay. The Golden Gate ferry operator’s policy, again including charging on board.

Every one of these needs a human to open the document in a browser, save it, quote the operative clause and record the date the document itself carries. That is how every other claim on this site got there. Until it happens, this page says what it does not know.
